According to the Book of Genesis, Hagar [a] was an Egyptian slave, a handmaiden of Sarah (then known as Sarai ), [2] whom Sarah gave to her own husband Abram (later renamed Abraham) as a wife to bear him a child. Abraham's firstborn son, through Hagar, Ishmael, became the progenitor of the Ishmaelites, generally taken to be the Arabs. We meet Hagar in Genesis 16, where she is introduced as Sarah ’s “Egyptian maid.”1 Midrashic tradition tells us that she was actually an Egyptian princess. Seeing how G‑d had miraculously saved Sarah from his clutches, Pharah concluded, “It is better for my daughter to be a maid in their home than a ruler in another."
